A Funny Thing Happened...

Humour is a funny thing. It works best when it occurs against a background of blandness or bleakness. It is something that grabs our attention, it shines in the foreground, and in turn brings a little light into our lives.
So is it a surprise that our latest edition of Farmyard News reminds us not to abuse our mega-electronic signalling machine by sharing jokes and funny pictures within our farming community? After all, the mega-electronic signalling machine has been enslaved for our betterment so it can remind us at random intervals to get up to date with our mandatory training or else face dire consequences. It tells us to keep up our milk production (x-ref Floral Philosophy).  It tells us we are brilliant and happy, while allowing the soon-to-be-departed an opportunity to say their farewells before falling off the end of the bale conveyor into an unknown future. Baleful times for some.

The  irony lies in the fact that on our little farm there is a merging of foreground and background. Absurdity becomes invisible when all around is absurd. A life-sized illuminated plastic sheep in corporate colours would be truly funny to find on your desk, but not when everyone else has the same. Such is life in Septford.

Oh, the plastic sheep example - just a little fantasy driven by hidden needs. But then again...
